Our Purpose Here At Free Plumbing And Heating Assistance
When it comes to plumbing and heating chores, some property owners or tenants throw their hands up in the air in despair not knowing what to do. As a result, plumbing and heating specialists are often called in to address simple little problems in which a homeowner or resident, armed with a little knowledge and basic hand tools, could have addressed themselves.
On the flip side, sometimes homeowners are over confident and begin to take on a project which exceeds their knowledge level and a disaster is created. Plumbing and heating specialists come in to find a major repair caused by an improper repair attempt at what was originally a simple cheap fix.

Understanding Of The Basics Pertaining To Your Home Water Distribution System
There is one basic rule which applies to both plumbing and heating repairs:
Shut Off and Turn Off
Shut off the water and test to make sure the water is off.
Turn off the furnace, including any gas lines or electrical breakers supplying fuel to the furnace.
Depending on the area where the plumbing problem is located, shutting off the water may be as simple and reaching in under a leaky sink and turning off a stop valve in the water supply line below the sink. A major repair may require accessing the main water shut off to a residence and this can often be found in the main water line within 3 to4 feet of the water meter. In the South or Southwestern parts of the North American continent, the water main shut off may be located in the yard area, concealed in an in ground box known as a buffalo box (a buffalo box is similar to the style of in ground boxes used by many lawn and garden irrigation systems).
Shutting off the power to a furnace may be as simple as throwing a wall switch, or turning off the furnace via a device located right on the furnace itself. To play it safe, one should always know where the main electrical breaker is for the furnace, and turn the power off there.
Gas lines supplying a furnace should be turned off at the nearest shut off valve. This style of shut off valve is usually a sideways pulling toggle style handle, which when pulled will only move a total of 90 degrees.
Additional Preliminary Plumbing and Heating Repair Tips
- Before commencing any plumbing and heating repairs, have an empty bucket and supply of clean rags available. Even with water supply lines shut off, water can sit in the lines and spill out into the work area when the line is opened. The presence of an empty bucket as well as absorbent cloths will go a long way to minimize any mess created. When working on a furnace, dust accumulations can be found and easy access to damp wiping clothes can be a great access. Sometimes with various furnace styles, there can be condensation drain lines which must be temporarily disconnected and drained into a bucket.
- Test to make sure your water pressure is turned off, and your furnace electricity and gas are off. This can be done by simply turning on a tap to see if water continually flows out under pressure (it’s normal for a few seconds of water pressure to occur as water may be sitting idle in the line under pressure). By throwing on the summer switch for your furnace, you should be able to quickly tell if the electricity to your furnace is on or off. Looking at a pilot light area, after you think you have turned off the gas line, will also tell you if the gas is on or off as well (remember — it may take a few seconds to burn off any gas which sits in the line between the gas line shut off and the furnace).
